Lessons from a Roasting Competition

We were encouraged by the results of our first shot at a coffee roasting competition. See what you think of our learnings...

1. You can be right and wrong at the same time

I was disappointed at how our competition batch of Guatemala Antigua developed after roasting. The judges seemed to agree with me, and awarded it 83 points out of 100.

Meanwhile, I expected the judges to think our Headbutter Blend was too dark, and mark it down. Instead, they gave it 85 points and a Bronze Medal!

2. Coffee is a mug's game

One minute, I was reading about an upcoming roasting competition and the next minute, blogging about what we've learned!

Along the way I've felt frustrated and been congratulated, taken advice and guessed it twice, wished it was over and wished to start over, counted the seconds and then waited for weeks.

Can't wait for next year!

3. Customers are great!

Some of our customers encouraged me to enter their favourite coffee in the competition. Some encouraged me to enter my favourite coffee in the competition.

Customers listened as I thought out loud about the what and the why of our entries. They listened and congratulated as we shared our results.

It could be said that customers were more right than I was about our best coffees. And, in the end, a coffee business is doomed without customers.

3. Take more photos

A picture tells a thousand words, every face tells a story and those who tell stories rule the world. I think that means I need more photos...of faces.
